sunset in las palmas, view on teide mountain

Let’s make it in a different way once and for a change let’s look at some beauty of Gran Canary island. Let it be the Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas. The largest on the island and the most beauty.

See this marvellous picture - the beautiful sunset, mountains that surrounds the coast, and this incredible view in the background - on a Teide, the highest mountain of Tenerife. It’s really worth to see.

lizards on gran canaria

As we are talking about canarias animals lets see another one, that also appears very often here. I’m talking of course about Lizards.
On Gran Canary Island you can find them in many places, but rather not in the crowd of people ;) They like to sit/lie on a hot stones and take a sunbath. You can meet them in the mountains or at the seaside, as well as in your own house - it depends on your home conditions. Fortunatelly, in contrast to cockroachs they are rather nice.

Sweet bug

a little canarias cockroach

While walking through we’re always looking for sth different from anything we know. One of differences is animals. Today we introduce you:

The Cockroach

You may say it’s not very strange to see a little bug or few of them. And I agree - it’s rather normal. But…

But in a normal way they are rather small. And for sure they are smaller then this living here. And in a normal way you meet them inside a buildings or in the gardens, the places with green, etc.

And here?
In the evenings they can be everywhere - they’re walking through the streets and pavements. Sometimes there’s so many of them in one place that is hardly possible to go through and not kill them. And they are BIG, really big. I’d say the average lenght is about 5 cm. Brrrr…

Knock, knock..

doors in canarias style

An example of “canarias typical architecture” ;)

Just kidding of course. But you must admit it’s very strange to put hands into the doors as a knob or knocker. Looks rather macabric, doesn’t it? ;)

Little rock-wall and a tree

on the crossroad to presa de chira

While travelling from San Bartolome de Tirajana, in direction to Ayacata, we’re passing a little crossroad. The crossing way goes to Presa de Chira. And on this crossroad there’s a little parking place, from which you can look down to the valley and up-around on surrounded mountains. In this place there’s also a little hill, so of course we climbed on it.

And on the photo you can see what we found up on it - full free place, a little rock-wall and a tree ;) Very nice :D

It’s only fire…

burried plants

Last year on the island was a really big fire. The temperatures were very high, so they couldn’t stop the flames. They finally put out the fire after a week and because of it big parts of plants completely burnt.

When you going accross the island, there’s almost no signs, everything looks like it nothing happens. You can see just few burnt trees from time to time.

Today we were at the Presa de Chira. It’s a big water reservoir in the central part of Gran Canaria. And here, yes, here - down in the valley, here you can see the real effects of last year’s fire. Just look above - the plants are completely destroyed! And unfortunately there are more plants like that.
But there’s also a good news - the new plants are growing up :)

Palms: Park or Cemetery?

palm trees on the coast of Castillo del Romeral

And again Castillo del Romeral, this little fishing village on the south-west coast of Gran Canaria. It seems to be so quiet. The coast was almost empty, only few people were walking there.
Near the sea, on the promenade, there is the place with a palm trees. Of course Palms are concreted in the pavement.

And just look at the picture - it looks like Palm Trees’ Cemetery! ;)

Central Termica de Barranco de Tirajana

Everybody puting on their Webs just the beautiful images of palm trees, ocean or montains. And so we do, but as you can see - not always.
On the photo above you can see the very different picture of Gran Canary island. This is what we found while driving through the south-east coast, exactly in the neighbourhood of little village Castillo del Romeral. This is as they calls it: Central Termica de Barranco de Tirajana. Here they’re producing electric energy for whole the island.

Calima

calima on Gran Canary island

The first day and it’s veeeery hot - it was about 32 degrees to late hours. As we heared - we got Calima!

We was told that calima is a specyfic atmospheric phenomenon taking place on the Canary Islands. The temperatures are growing up and the air is full of a little parts of sand, flowing here from the Sahara desert. The air-visibility is very low. It’s like a thick fog sometimes.
Just like on the foto above - even the mountains disappeared!

Welcome!
